Preview into the New York Jets 2023 Season

With the premier of Hard Knocks coming out last night I though it was the perfect time to discuss the buzz and some upcoming story lines regarding the 2023 season. Personally I have never been this excited for a NYJ season ever…they haven’t been in the playoffs since I was 10 years old and there wasn’t much hope going into the Fitzpatrick year despite ripping off 10 wins. Two years ago my goal for the season was 5 win and they were only able to muster 4. Last year I just wanted to see the team go positive and compete in every game. Despite having a exciting start to the beginning of the season, the ultimately imploded in classic Jets fashion. Zach Wilson proved himself to be a worse bust than Ryan Leaf, and any kid that has played Madden could have told you that OC Mike LaFluer’s playbook was absolute garbage. Over 100 variations of plays and some how none of them were QB friendly. However, the young talent showed out with Sauce Gardener and Garrett Wilson taking home both DROY and OROY as well as RB Breece Hall having a tremendous start to the season before going down in week 6 with an ACL tear.

Now with all this young talent we go out and get Aaron Rodgers and his entourage and suddenly this team, that has not made the playoffs since 2010, is all of a sudden all in…Super Bowl or bust. Now as a die hard NY sports fan the “all in” mentality has crippled a couple of my favorite teams in recent history. The Islanders two years ago after two trips the the Eastern Conference finals went “all in” and signed some washed up vets including Zach Parise and Zdeno Chara and wound up missing the playoffs in 2022. This proved to set the franchise back in 2023 because although they were able to clinch a wild card spot in the playoffs, They really were not able to keep up with the Carolina Hurricanes and looked far from the team they were two years ago. Their defense (which was the strong suit of their team) declined and their offense continued to be less and less productive.

Most recently the Mets went all in putting all their eggs in the baskets of prehistoric aces Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander and now the most expensive MLB roster ever just had a fire sale midway through July. They probably won’t be competitive again until 2026 the earliest according to owner Steve Cohen.

At the end of the day this Jets team will either be like the 86′ Mets or the 2023 Mets. The fate of the 2023 season now rest on the arms of a 39 year-old (future HOFmer) QB taking a group of rookie contracts to the promise land. Only time will tell…
